FreeRent Atlanta Grant: 2027 Cohort

The FreeRent Atlanta Grant is a year-long program that provides Atlanta families with rental assistance and wraparound support as they work toward structured financial stability goals. The program supports hardworking, renting households facing unforeseen hardship by keeping families housed while they build savings, strengthen money management, and secure their financial future.

What Is the FreeRent Atlanta Grant?

The FreeRent Atlanta Grant is a year-long program, not just rental assistance. For one year, households selected for the program receive:

  • Rent support for up to 12 months
  • Financial education classes and financial coaching
  • Regular check-ins and goal setting
  • Connections to community resources
  • Access to Roots Growth and savings incentives

Working, renting households in Atlanta who are ready to grow, save, and build a stronger future.

The goal

Help households move from getting by to building real financial stability, with a plan built just for them.

What Every Recipient Works Toward

  1. Save money

    Build up at least three months of rent in savings.

  2. Pay down debt

    Chip away at what you owe.

  3. Build money confidence

    Learn skills to manage money with more confidence and less stress.

  4. Move your goals forward

    Make real progress on your personal and career goals.

Who Should Apply?

We built this program for households ready to commit to themselves, their goals, and the work it takes to get there.

Based on the recipients who've had the most success in our program so far, here is what we look for:

Minimum requirements

  1. Job

    At least one adult in the household has held a full-time job for at least one year.

  2. Income

    Household income falls between 50% and 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI) for the City of Atlanta. See income limits by household size.

  3. Rent-to-income

    Your rent is no more than 50% of your monthly income.

  4. Rent amount

    Monthly rent is around $2,000 or less.

  5. Location

    You have an active lease inside the City of Atlanta.

What else we look for

  1. Your time and capacity

    Do you have the time and energy to fully participate? Recipients in the program commit to at least 5 hours of programming per month (classes, coaching, and check-ins) for the length of the program.

  2. Your mindset

    Are you ready to take this on with an open, “let's do this” attitude?

  3. Your drive

    This one matters most. We look for real motivation and initiative: individuals who are excited, not unsure, about joining.

  4. Your goals

    What do you want for your future? We want to hear it, and we want to help you get there.

  5. Your support system

    Who is in your corner? Family, friends, and community support all help you succeed.

We are looking for individuals and families who are ready to make a real commitment to this program. If that's you, we want to hear from you!

The process starts with an eligibility screening. See the timeline below for exact dates.

  • Identification
  • Your lease
  • A rent ledger
  • Income verification
  • Documentation of your hardship
  • A 90-second video introducing yourself and your goals for the program

FreeRent Atlanta Grant 2027 Cohort Application Timeline

  1. Info session

    September 30, 2026 at 12:00 PM ET. Join us to learn about the program and how to apply.

  2. Eligibility screening

    The formal process starts with an eligibility screening. Submit an eligibility form from October 5 @ 12 PM to October 12 @ 5 PM.

  3. Invitation to submit a full application

    After completing the eligibility screening, we will invite qualified applicants to complete a full application.

  4. Interviews

    Selected applicants will be invited to a first-round interview with the FreeRent team. A smaller group of finalists moves forward to a second interview with the FreeRent team and review committee.

  5. Background and credit check

    Finalists will complete a background check, a soft credit check (no impact to your credit), and employment verification.

  6. 2027 Cohort selected

    By December 2026, we will notify the households selected for the 2027 Cohort. The official program will begin in January 2027 with a mandatory program orientation, and the first rent payment will be due in February 2027.
